In a rare medical case, a baby girl experienced significant genital changes after repeated skin-to-skin contact with her father, who was using testosterone gel. The incident, documented by medical professionals, highlights the potential risks of hormone treatments around children.

Professor Jovanna Dahlgren, a pediatric endocrinology specialist at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, emphasized the critical importance of understanding hormone treatment risks. The case involved a father using a prescribed testosterone gel to address low hormone levels.

During multiple instances of close contact, the infant was inadvertently exposed to the hormone. By ten months, medical examinations revealed substantial changes: her clitoris had elongated, and her labia had fused, creating anatomical configurations resembling male genitalia.

Blood tests confirmed dangerously elevated testosterone levels in the infant’s system. Swedish medical professionals noted that the term “micropenis” was technically incorrect, as the condition involved female genitalia altered by hormone exposure.

Fortunately, once the exposure ceased, the infant’s physiological characteristics gradually returned to normal. Professor Dahlgren, who has observed similar cases over the years, stressed the importance of caution with hormone treatments.
