Neil Patrick Harris Declines Knowledge of Biological Parentage of Twins

When actor Neil Patrick Harris and his husband David Burtka became parents in 2010, they made an unconventional choice: to deliberately remain unaware of each twin’s biological father.

Their 13-year-old children, Gideon and Harper, were conceived via surrogate. In a 2014 interview with Barbara Walters, NPHknown for roles in “How I Met Your Mother” and “Doogie Howser, M.D.”revealed his continued disinterest in determining biological parentage.

“We are their parents, and I love them implicitly,”

Harris explained. He described their conception process candidly: ”

We inserted one of my sperm and one of David’s sperm into two eggs, hoping both would take since we both wanted to be biological fathers.”

Miraculously, both embryos successfully developed. As fraternal twins, each child originated from a separate embryo, with an anonymous egg donor facilitating the process. Despite not knowing precise biological origins, the couple suspects each child’s parentage based on behavioral characteristics.

Last year, the family garnered attention by sharing a retro-style holiday card through a Minted partnership. The image featured Harris, Burtka, twins Gideon and Harper, and their French Bulldog, Chunk. Fans enthusiastically responded, praising the card’s creative design.

In October, Harris commemorated the twins’ birthday with an affectionate Instagram post:

“And, just like that, they’re teenagers. Happy birthday, Harper and Gideon. You are the lights of my life. I can’t wait to watch you want nothing to do with me, and I promise I’ll be with you through all of it.”

The celebrity couple welcomed their twins in 2010.

Now thriving in New York, Gideon and Harper continue to enjoy life with their devoted fathers.
