A Chinese retail businessman has introduced an innovative “unhappy leave” policy to enhance employee work-life balance.

Yu Donglai, founder and chairman of Pang Dong Lai, a retail chain in Henan province, announced employees can now apply for an additional 10 days of leave at their discretion, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

Unhappy leaves cannot be denied by the administration.

“I want every staff member to have freedom,” Yu explained. “Everyone experiences unhappy moments, so if you’re not feeling well, don’t come to work.”

The unique policy ensures that:

Previously, Yu has publicly criticized the glorification of extended working hours, calling such practices “unethical”. His employment policies reflect this philosophy:
