When applied to roofs and sidewalks, this coating can lower surface temperatures by over 4.5C, potentially reducing air conditioning demands and mitigating urban heat island effects. Professor Xiulin Ruan estimates that covering 1,000 square feet could generate up to 10 kW of cooling powersurpassing most residential air conditioning units.

Evolutionary Stages: From 1.0 to 2.0
The researchers’ initial version required a 0.4mm thickness, suitable for building roofs. The latest iteration, version 2.0, is a nanoporous paint incorporating hexagonal boron nitride, achieving 97.9% reflectivity with just 0.15mm thickness.

Innovative Composition
Team member Andrea Felicelli explains that hexagonal boron nitride’s high refractive index enables strong sunlight scattering. Its unique nanoplatelets are more efficient at redirecting solar radiation compared to previous spherical nanoparticles.

Future Potential
Version 2.0 is 80% lighter, opening possibilities for applications in transportation, clothing, electronics, and more. However, commercial viability remains cost-dependent due to complex production processes.

Environmental Significance
Beyond breaking reflectivity records, the research aims to combat global warming and conserve energy. The team’s six-year development process involved screening over 100 materials and testing approximately 50 formulations.

Unique Cooling Mechanism
